How Our Experiences Shape Our Success in Marketing and Business

As we step into 2025, reflecting on the journey that has shaped our careers is more relevant than ever. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, experience is more than just a résumé line—it’s the foundation of our expertise, creativity, and client success.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of being interviewed by my longtime friend and colleague, Brant Fricker, on his cable network show Word on the Street. That conversation was a reminder of how the different chapters of my life—music, performing, leadership, and marketing—have come together to shape my career as a brand strategist, creative director, and digital marketing expert at Sandy Hibbard Creative.

From Gospel Choirs to Marketing Strategies

Brant and I go way back—to my days leading an 80-voice gospel choir at church, where he was just a kid, learning to play the trumpet. Over the years, we both carved out careers in music, television, and marketing. Today, Brant is a published author (Hollywood Marketing on a Mayberry Budget), a successful entrepreneur, and a dynamic personality, full of life and energy.

During our interview, Brant asked a question that stuck with me:

👉 “How has your experience in music, performing, writing, and leadership influenced the way you serve your clients?”

The answer? Everything I’ve done has prepared me for the work I do today.

Why Experience Matters in Marketing

In business and brand marketing, we often hear about the latest trends—AI tools, social media algorithms, and digital transformation. But what truly sets a marketing expert apart isn’t just knowledge of these tools—it’s the ability to apply real-world experience to solve client challenges.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

🔹 Creative storytelling is universal – Whether I was leading a choir, writing songs, or crafting brand narratives, the ability to tell a compelling story remains at the heart of effective marketing strategies.

🔹 Leadership fosters collaboration – Directing a choir wasn’t just about music; it was about teamwork, vision, and inspiring people—the same principles that drive a successful marketing campaign.

🔹 Performance builds confidence – Whether on stage or pitching a brand strategy to a client, experience in public speaking and communication has been invaluable.

🔹 Authenticity connects – Consumers are drawn to real, engaging brands. Everything I learned in music and performance—about emotion, engagement, and connection—now plays a role in helping brands develop their authentic voice.

What If You Don’t Have Years of Experience?

When you’re young or just starting in your career, it can feel like you’re at a disadvantage because you don’t have a long list of experiences to pull from. But here’s the good news—experience isn’t just about age; it’s about being proactive, staying curious, and learning from every opportunity.

Here are a few ways to build credibility and expertise early on:

Seek mentors – Learning from people who have been there before gives you insights that no course or book can teach. Find professionals whose careers you admire and build relationships with them.

Say yes to new opportunities – Whether it’s a small freelance gig, an internship, or a passion project, every experience adds value to your skill set. Don’t underestimate the power of hands-on work.

Learn through trial and error – You don’t have to be perfect; you just have to be willing to try. Get comfortable experimenting with marketing strategies, social media campaigns, or branding exercises, even if they don’t always succeed.

Tell your own story – Use your own life, education, and small wins as examples. Even if you’re not an industry veteran, you still have perspectives and ideas that can offer value to clients and audiences.

Stay ahead of trends – In today’s world, knowledge is just as important as experience. Staying on top of emerging digital marketing strategies, SEO, and branding techniques can help you establish credibility even if you’re just starting out.

How You Can Leverage Your Own Experience for Success

As we move forward in 2025, it’s worth asking yourself:

💡 How have my past experiences shaped the way I serve my clients?
💡 What skills from past jobs, hobbies, or creative pursuits can I apply to my current work?
💡 How can I use my unique background to stand out in a crowded digital space?

The truth is, success isn’t just about keeping up with trends—it’s about using your unique experiences to create something fresh, valuable, and impactful.

At Sandy Hibbard Creative, we help brands tell their stories, connect with their audience, and build strategies that reflect their authentic voice. Whether it’s social media marketing, brand consulting, or digital content creation, I bring my years of experience in leadership, performance, and storytelling to every project.
